about

San Diego’s Strawberry Moons have just released a new video for their new single, “Love in the Time of Virus.” It’s a lush and romantic ballad with a psychedelic touch, reflective on the surreal and insular last year that everyone went through. The video is likewise intimate, showcasing the band inside of a dark space, performing to no one in particular—a feeling that probably feels familiar to most bands right now.

Songwriter/keyboardist Will A Lerner says in a statement, “When the lockdown started, I, like many people, went on long walks everyday. It was strange seeing normally busy streets quieter: less cars, businesses closed, people avoiding each other. It’s what needed to happen, but I kept thinking that it wouldn’t take much for things to spiral out of control.”

lyrics

“Stay in isolation – remain calm
Be alone and don’t visit your friends
No communication but on your phone
Obey the rules – you know we know what’s best”

Oh what a time to fall in love
A smile from a window not enough
A glass to separate us
Will be the way we live… Not enough

Politsiya on my street every night
Dogs, Kalishnakovs both by their side
Neighbors trained to rat if they see you outside
Slums silent but for the dyings’ cries

Oh what a time to fall in love
A smile from a window not enough
A glass to separate us
Will be the way we live… Not enough

You told me of a secret place you knew as a child
Long bereft; the lights don’t shine in here
I waited for what seemed like days until you appeared…
Aaaaaahhhhh…. aaaaaahhhhh

But oh, did I hear a rattle in your lungs?
Oooooo oooooo aaaaahhhhhh
Your skin is hot, face overly flushed
We keep it hushed…

Oooooo oooooo aaaaahhhhhh

The walls have now lifted, as have you
I visit where you lay from time to time
Covering my breath… What’s the use?
If it only protected you from me
